Della Sera Strings organizes a variety of experiences for its members to provide broad orchestral and ensemble exposure.
Sectionals
At least twice per year, the orchestra is split into sections for focused instruction on specific musical and technical issues. Marie Peebles leads our violins and violas, while Marsha Moffitt coaches the cellos and basses.
Chamber music workshops
Della Sera Strings hosts a four-day chamber music workshop at least once every year. Participants are placed into ensembles and immersed in an educational chamber music experience. Professional coaching by Marsha Moffitt and Marie Peebles is scheduled daily for each ensemble; there is also an orchestral component and a master class. An informal concert wraps up the four-day session.
Community recitals
Community recitals are a valuable opportunity to perform in the local community and to be inspired by the work of other area musicians. Della Sera Strings has had the privilege of performing in the annual Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra Community Recital since 2016.
Retirement and nursing home concerts
Annually, Della Sera Strings performs a concert at a local retirement or nursing home. Not only does this give us performance opportunities, but it’s also an enjoyable way for us to share our music with those who may not have much opportunity to experience live music.
Special guests
Our members appreciate the opportunity to learn from invited guests. We have previously welcomed horn player Neil Spaulding, who brought with him an assortment of horns through history; oboist Nancy Nelson, who walked us through the intricacies of woodwind playing; and Laura Jones, who spoke to us about the evolution of the viol family and our contemporary string instruments.
Ensembles
Long-term chamber ensembles have been formed by Della Sera members and have the opportunity to be coached by our instructors on a more formal and regular basis. Contact us for more information.
